Babelsberg is networking film production as a digital ecosystem

In total 10 businesses and universities from Babelsberg and Berlin have researched and developed new technologies for the film industry between 2014 and 2017. The center of work for the research alliance “dwerft” was to find a solution for networking the so far only singular collected metadata from the whole production process of movies.

“Information from the production are getting more and more important for the distribution of movies on different platforms in ages of the internet”, says confederation speaker Jörg Wehling.

The final conference took place on May 12, 2017 with around 120 participants at the Representation of the Federal State of Brandenburg at the federation in Berlin.
With the core technology “LINKED PRODUCTION DATA CLOUD“ metadata can be collected, saved and made currently available on the base of semantic ontologies out of different trades of a film production. Hence, production processes are becoming more efficient and the distribution is able to access important information about a movie already before and during a production.

The research alliance “dwerft – linked film & tv services” consists of the following partners:

Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv (DRA), filmwerte GmbH, Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, Hasso-Plattner-Institut (HPI), Alexander von Humboldt Institut für Internet und Gesellschaft (HIIG), Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT), Interlake Media GmbH, transfermedia GmbH, wdr mediagroup digital GmbH, yovisto GmbH.

The partners invested more than 2.3 Million Euros into research and development between 2014 and 2017 and have been supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with another 5.5 Million Euros. The research alliance is the biggest F&E project concerning media technologies at the media location Babelsberg so far and is also part of the MediaTech Hub Potsdam, one of 12 national digital hubs, which have been chosen by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology in April 2017 and which are being exploited world-wide now.
